Job Overview
As an Online Underwriter for Homeowners Insurance, you will play a critical role in promoting new business written premium growth and favorable loss ratios in accordance with underwriting guidelines, third-party risk modeling services, and personal underwriting authority. You will work closely with agency partners and sales representatives to improve risk classification, bind ratios, and sales volume. Your analytical skills and attention to detail will enable sound risk selection, and you will be expected to make a direct impact on business results.
Key Responsibilities
- Profitably underwrite a particular geographic territory, focusing on promoting new business written premium growth and favorable loss ratios
- Build relationships with agency partners and sales representatives to improve risk classification, bind ratios, and sales volume
- Gain an understanding of agency management, product distribution, and claims procedures to enhance growth and underwriting profit
- Work cross-functionally with Compliance, Claims, Operations, and other business units to develop forms and product enhancements
- Support portfolio management by developing corrective action where necessary using key metrics such as bind ratios, loss ratios, renewal retention ratios, and premium growth
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- 2+ years of relevant work experience or internship in insurance underwriting
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- High attention to detail, creativity, intellectual curiosity, a desire to communicate, and strong time management skills
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications will make you stand out as a candidate:
- Bachelor's degree
- 3+ years of insurance underwriting experience with 1+ years of Personal Lines insurance experience
- Sales, marketing, or relationship management skills with the ability to influence others
- Successful completion of CPCU or other insurance and/or financial designations
- Experience using third-party catastrophe risk modeling services
