Spotlight on Data Infrastructure Teams
We have several teams that make up our data infrastructure, each with its own unique focus and responsibilities. These include:
- Database Access Platform: This team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that facilitates data abstractions to operate at sub-millisecond latencies while allowing our microservices to more easily store, consume, and manage their data.
- Data Platform Infrastructure: This team acts as a platform for our own data platforms, providing shared infrastructure and tooling that enables us to quickly innovate on providing state-of-the-art data and analytics systems to the rest of the company.
- Big Data Compute: This team is responsible for providing the cloud-native platform for distributed data processing, supporting batch data processing, and providing support for Spark, ETL data into our Petabytes-scale data warehouse, and access that data using Spark and Presto/TrinoDB.
- Big Data Orchestration: This team offers the platform for scheduling, orchestrating, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner, including foundational services that host all ETL and ML workloads running on Big Data Systems.
Key Responsibilities
As a Distributed Systems Engineer on our Data Platform team, you will be responsible for:
- Designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems features and applications
- Architecting and building a robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure
- Leading cross-functional initiatives and collaborating with engineers, product managers, and TPM across teams
- Sharing our experiences with the open source communities and contributing to Netflix OSS
- Building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems
- Designing and developing RESTful web services
- Collaborating with other teams to identify and prioritize project requirements
- Participating in code reviews and ensuring that our codebase is of the highest quality
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 2+ years of experience in building large-scale distributed systems features or applications
- Proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services
- Experience in building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems
- Proficiency in Java or other object-oriented programming languages
- Experience with multi-threading and comfortable tackling related challenges
- A BS in Computer Science or a related field
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Experience with Spark, Presto/Trino, Druid, Iceberg, and distributed database systems
- Experience with cloud-native platforms and distributed data processing
- Experience with big data orchestration and scheduling
- Experience with open source communities and contributing to Netflix OSS
- Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems such as Git
