Job Summary

As a Remote Inpatient Coder III, you will be responsible for utilizing electronic medical records and computerized encoders to assign and sequence diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient encounters. Your expertise will ensure compliance with Official Coding Guidelines, CMS regulations, and Health Information Management (HIM) policies and procedures. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong and diverse skillset, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Review inpatient medical records to assign and sequence diagnosis and procedure codes using encoder software and following official coding guidelines.
• Validate the accuracy of Admission-Discharge-Transfer (ADT) data fields, abstracting discharge disposition, physicians, procedure dates, and present on admission (POA) indicators.
• Address coding edits and needed corrections daily, reviewing accounts and performing corrections for internal audits and external denials.
• Formulate physician queries for validation of pathological findings and request clinical validation queries for Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) review and follow-up.
• Meet and maintain Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) coding quality and productivity standards, submitting daily productivity reports to management.
• Attend educational meetings and seminars to maintain certification and continuing education requirements.
• Maintain strict adherence to patient confidentiality according to MHS Standards and regulatory requirements.
• Perform other duties as requested, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to adapt to changing priorities.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

To succeed as a Remote Inpatient Coder III, you will need:

• A High School Diploma or Equivalent.
• A Certified Coding Associate (CCA) certification from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
• A minimum of three (3) years of inpatient coding experience in a hospital setting.
• Strong knowledge of Official Coding Guidelines, CMS regulations, and HIM policies and procedures.
• Proficiency in using electronic medical records and computerized encoders.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining a high level of productivity and quality.

Preferred qualifications include:

• A Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification.
• A Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.
• Experience with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) programs.
• Familiarity with Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups (MSDRGs) and All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APRDRGs).
