Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Special Education Teaching Assistant II to support our teachers in providing high-quality educational services to students with special needs. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in assisting with classroom planning, preparation, implementation, and management, as well as providing individualized support to students with diverse learning needs. Key Responsibilities
- Assist and support teachers in classroom planning, preparation, implementation, and management to ensure a productive and inclusive learning environment.
- Help formulate and implement individual student objectives and goals, with a focus on self-sufficiency and academic success.
- Assist with documentation associated with individualized programs, including progress monitoring and reporting.
- Provide support in special needs areas, such as wheelchair transfers, toileting, diaper changing, tracheotomy suctioning, tube feedings, catheterization, augmentative communication, and behavior management.
- Monitor and document medication administration and side effects, medical interventions, breathing treatments, and other health-related procedures.
- Shadow and support students in mainstream and community environments to promote socialization and inclusion.
- Participate in total school functions and activities, including cafeteria and playground supervision, to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
- Implement specific therapy exercises under the direction of a licensed therapist to support students' physical, emotional, and cognitive development.
Essential Qualifications
- Associate's degree or 60 semester hours of coursework documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Pass a formal state assessment, such as the Master Teacher's Para Educator Learning Network.
- First aid and CPR training required.
- Demonstrated general proficiency in computer programs, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with strong human relations skills.
- Knowledge and understanding of students with special needs, with the ability to maintain discipline standards and apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional training in child psychology, classroom management, special education needs, or other related areas of study.
- General clerical experience, with skills in typing, filing, and recording.
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures, and Board policies.
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response, with strong time management skills.
