Job Summary
As an Early Childhood Special Education Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational and personal growth of our students with special needs. Under the guidance of our licensed teachers and therapists, you will assist students with activities designed to maximize their participation in learning and achievement of Individualized Education Program (IEP) objectives. Your dedication, patience, and creativity will help create a nurturing and engaging learning environment that promotes social, emotional, and academic development.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement instructional plans and lesson modifications as directed by licensed teachers and therapists to ensure students meet their learning objectives.
- Provide physical care and support as needed, including diapering, toileting, feeding, and assisting with adaptive physical education and motor activities.
- Observe, document, and reinforce appropriate student behaviors, communicating progress to teachers and facilitators.
- Participate in weekly team meetings to review student progress, plan upcoming lessons, and engage in professional development opportunities.
- Assist with non-instructional activities, such as escorting students to and from buses or cars, and supporting students during outdoor activities.
- Record and update student progress toward achieving their IEP objectives, using technology and computer-based programs to manage and organize files, communication, records, and databases.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications and skills:
- A valid Educator License with Stipulations (PARA), Substitute License, or Professional Educator License, with experience working with special education students preferred.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to communicate with students and staff.
- Basic arithmetic skills and ability to use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, demonstrating sensitivity to individual differences and maintaining confidentiality of student and staff information.
- Ability to establish supportive and compassionate relationships with students with special needs, and to maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.
- Physical ability to lift students and perform other manipulations to support daily living skills, with the ability to push, pull, lift, or carry up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
While not required, the following preferred qualifications and skills will be considered an asset:
- Associate's degree or higher, or 60 semester hours of coursework.
- Experience working with students with special needs, particularly in an early childhood setting.
- Ability to speak multiple languages, with a focus on languages spoken by our student population.
- Experience with adaptive equipment and technology used to support students with special needs.
