Vice President of Research – Job DescriptionPosition Summary The Vice President of Research is responsible for leading the organization’s research strategy, driving innovation, and advancing knowledge in support of business objectives. This role oversees research programs, manages research teams, and ensures the development of high-impact insights, technologies, or products. The VP of Research collaborates closely with executive leadership to align research initiatives with long-term strategic goals.
Key ResponsibilitiesResearch Strategy & Leadership
• Define and execute the organization’s research vision and strategy
• Identify emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities for innovation
• Align research priorities with business, product, or market objectives
Research Program Management
• Oversee the design, execution, and delivery of research projects and programs
• Ensure scientific rigor, quality, and relevance of research outputs
• Manage research roadmaps, timelines, and resource allocation
Innovation & Thought Leadership
• Drive innovation through new concepts, methodologies, and technologies
• Publish research findings, white papers, or patents (where applicable)
• Represent the organization in industry forums, conferences, and collaborations
Team Leadership & Development
• Build, lead, and mentor multidisciplinary research teams (e.g., scientists, analysts, engineers)
• Foster a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and continuous learning
• Attract and retain top research talent
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Strategy teams
• Translate research insights into actionable business or product outcomes
• Support commercialization of research where applicable
Partnerships & External Engagement
• Establish partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry groups
• Manage collaborative research initiatives and joint ventures
• Secure research funding or grants (if applicable)
Governance & Compliance
• Ensure adherence to ethical standards, data privacy, and regulatory requirements
• Establish research governance, documentation, and review processes
• Manage intellectual property and knowledge assets
Qualifications
• Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in a relevant field (e.g., Science, Engineering, Economics, or related discipline)
• 15+ years of experience in research, innovation, or R&D leadership roles
• Proven track record of leading high-impact research programs
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
• Experience in publishing, patents, or productizing research outcomes
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
