Senior Documentation Engineer

Apply Now
WHAT WE NEED Hazelcast is looking for a Documentation Engineer to reimagine how we create, deliver, and maintain technical documentation. This is not a traditional technical writing role. We want someone who can build an AI-augmented documentation practice from the ground up—rethinking toolchains, workflows, and information architecture to produce better docs with a leaner team. You’ll be the sole documentation professional at Hazelcast, which means you’ll own the entire docs experience: strategy, architecture, content, tooling, and delivery. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, developer relations, and support to ensure our users get the right information at the right time. You’ll also be the internal champion for documentation quality, driving a culture where great docs are everyone’s responsibility. This role exists because we see an opportunity to transform our documentation process. We’re investing a senior-level headcount because we believe one exceptional person with the right tools and AI-first mindset can have more impact than a traditional docs team. WHAT YOU’LL DO Own Documentation Strategy & Architecture - Define and execute a documentation strategy that aligns with Hazelcast’s product roadmap and developer experience goals - Restructure information architecture to improve discoverability, reduce redundancy, and support self-service learning paths - Establish quality standards, style guidelines, and content governance across all user-facing documentation Build AI-Augmented Documentation Workflows - Design and implement AI-assisted authoring pipelines that accelerate content creation, review, and maintenance - Evaluate and integrate AI tools for draft generation, content auditing, terminology consistency, and translation readiness - Develop prompts, templates, and automation that enable engineers to contribute higher-quality documentation with less friction - Measure the impact of AI tooling on documentation velocity, quality, and coverage—and iterate based on results Write, Edit, and Ship Great Documentation - Author and maintain documentation for Hazelcast products, including conceptual guides, API references, tutorials, and troubleshooting content - Edit and improve developer-contributed drafts, turning rough technical notes into polished, user-centered content - Overhaul legacy documentation to meet current standards and fill coverage gaps Modernize Tooling & Infrastructure - Evaluate the current docs-as-code stack and recommend improvements to the toolchain, publishing pipeline, and content management approach - Implement CI/CD-style workflows for documentation that support automated testing, link checking, and quality gates - Optimize the docs site for search, navigation, and developer experience Champion Documentation Culture - Be the internal voice of the user—advocating for documentation quality in product planning and release processes - Build lightweight contribution frameworks that make it easy for engineers and PMs to participate in docs - Track documentation health metrics (coverage, freshness, feedback scores) and report on progress WHAT YOU HAVE Required - 7+ years of experience in technical writing, documentation engineering, or a related role in software development environments - Demonstrated experience using AI/LLM tools to improve documentation workflows—not just experimentation, but production-level integration that delivered measurable results - Strong docs-as-code skills: proficiency with markup languages (Markdown, AsciiDoc), static site generators, and Git-based publishing workflows - Proven ability to define and execute documentation strategy independently—you’ve set direction, not just followed it - Excellent technical aptitude: you can read code, understand distributed systems concepts, and translate complex technical ideas into clear, usable content - Impeccable writing and editing skills with a user-centered approach to content design - Experience working effectively in fully remote, distributed teams across time zones - Strong collaboration skills—you know how to build relationships with engineers, PMs, and stakeholders and get the information you need Nice to Have - Experience with distributed systems, data infrastructure, or real-time processing platforms - Hands-on programming skills (Python, JavaScript, or Java) sufficient to build tooling, automation, or prototypes - Experience with Antora, Netlify, or GitHub Actions for documentation deployment - Background in developer experience, developer advocacy, or developer education - Experience evaluating and selecting documentation platforms or building custom publishing pipelines - Contributions to open source documentation or communities - Familiarity with Hazelcast products or similar in-memory computing / stream processing platforms BENEFITS - 25 days annual leave + Bank holidays - Group Company Pension Plan - Private Medical Insurance - Private Dental Insurance - Life Insurance - EAP (Employee Assistance Program)
