About the Role
We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Mechanic to perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repair/parts replacement on district vehicles, including electrical, air conditioning, brakes, glass, engine maintenance and overhaul, transmissions, exhaust, tires, suspension, and drivetrain systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fleet maintenance and repair, with a focus on medium/heavy-duty vehicles. As a Mechanic at School District U-46, you will work independently while contributing to a positive and professional team effort.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform diagnostics, maintenance, and repair/parts replacement on district vehicles, including electrical, air conditioning, brakes, glass, engine maintenance and overhaul, transmissions, exhaust, tires, suspension, and drivetrain systems
- Assist with body and structural work as needed
- Complete all categories/levels of preventative maintenance, as well as IDOT mandated brake inspections
- Prepare and submit accurate and timely repair & maintenance records
- Follow all departmental procedures related to shop operations
- Maintain vehicle compliance utilizing the Illinois Department of Transportation and federal standards
- Maintain the highest level of work performance and complete repairs as assigned, while upholding high safety standards
- Maintain a clean and organized shop area
- Maintain an appropriate set of personal job-related tools
- Safely operate the district tow truck(s) while performing road calls
- Obey all traffic laws and department guidelines when operating district owned vehicles
- Assist with snow removal when assigned
- Work independently while contributing to a positive and professional team effort
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Auto/Diesel/industrial vocational trade school preferred
- Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred
- Four (4) years fleet maintenance and repair experience on medium/heavy-duty vehicles preferred
- Ability to multitask
- Knowledge of diesel and gasoline vehicle repairs and maintenance
- Knowledge of State and Federal mandated requirements regarding the repair and maintenance of school buses
- Must have a valid driver's license and clean MVR
- Must be able to obtain a Class A license with airbrake endorsement within 6 months of employment
- Must be at least 21 years of age
Physical Demands:
- Required to do repetitive bending, kneeling, and lifting (at least 50 lbs.) with proper technique, during the course of the normal work day
- Work safely while climbing and/or standing on ladders
- Must work safely in varying weather conditions
