The University of Montana is a flagship, research-intensive R1 institution with approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The English Language Institute (ELI) is central to the University of Montana's internationalization efforts, striving for an inclusive and equitable culture. Among the programs it supports are the Intensive English Program, undergraduate conditional admissions, sponsored students, Pathway Program, short-term programs for international partners, sponsored teacher-training programs, an Online TESOL Certificate program, and supplemental programming for UM's renowned Mansfield Center.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide academic and administrative leadership to the English Language Institute, managing and securing resources, and collaborating with other campus units.
- Seek opportunities with international partners, promote excellence in teaching, and foster a collegial atmosphere that supports ELI's mission and goals.
- Supervise and coordinate administrative, teaching, student recruitment, and service activities, serving as the chief representative and executive officer of the ELI.
- Formulate, implement, and interpret policies concerning academic programs, budgetary matters, and personnel (faculty, professionals, and staff).
- Represent the ELI to the University and the broader community, as well as to sponsoring agencies and prospective/current partners worldwide.
Program and Partnership Development
- Develop and maintain partnerships with international institutions, organizations, and governments to support ELI's programs and goals.
- Identify and pursue new opportunities for program development, including grants and externally funded projects.
- Collaborate with other campus units to develop and implement comprehensive internationalization strategies.
Program Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the ELI, including program management, marketing and recruitment, instructor and staff management, and testing and assessment.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the quality and effectiveness of ELI's programs.
- Manage the ELI's budget, resources, and personnel, ensuring compliance with University policies and procedures.
Marketing and Recruitment Development
- Develop and implement marketing and recruitment strategies to promote ELI's programs and attract international students.
- Collaborate with other campus units to develop and implement comprehensive recruitment and retention strategies.
- Build relationships with international partners, agents, and sponsors to support ELI's recruitment efforts.
Instructor and Staff Management and Mentoring
- Supervise and mentor ELI instructors and staff, providing guidance and support to ensure their professional development and success.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the quality and effectiveness of ELI's instructional programs.
- Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that supports the success of ELI's instructors and staff.
Testing Assessment, and Instructional Materials
- Oversee the development and implementation of testing and assessment procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of ELI's programs.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the quality and effectiveness of ELI's instructional materials.
- Collaborate with other campus units to develop and implement comprehensive assessment and evaluation strategies.
Requirements and Qualifications
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Ability to understand standard office procedures.
- Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity.
- Must be able to work independently, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling assignments, and be accountable for their work.
- Strong work ethic to achieve excellent results.
- Ability to actively contribute to a work environment that embraces diversity and diverse perspectives, and builds constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation, and mutual regard.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Experience in or knowledge of TESOL.
- 3 years of progressively responsible experience in an office or administrative environment.
- Experience using budgeting and fiscal management principles and procedures.
- Experience in grants and externally funded projects.
- Record of administrative leadership.
- Understanding of student recruitment and marketing.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Proficient in MS-Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), MS-Outlook.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is $63,000-$65,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications. The University of Montana offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
