We're on the hunt for a Senior Data Scientist to significantly shape our data-driven future at Airtasker. You'll work closely with our Staff Data Scientist and directly with our product and marketing teams , identifying, developing, and implementing innovative data science solutions that directly enhance the user experience. Over the next year, expect to dive into exciting projects, including optimising our search algorithms using ElasticSearch and building advanced classification models to categorise tasks.
Lead ML/NLP model development - from identifying opportunities to deploying real-time models that align with product and business goals.
Turn data into impact - transform complex structured and unstructured data into actionable insights that enhance product features and user engagement.
Collaborate cross-functionally - work closely with product managers, marketers, and engineers to integrate and optimise ML models across the product ecosystem.
Communicate clearly and confidently - present complex insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders, making research outcomes understandable and actionable.
Scale data science operations - improve workflows and automation tools, and help the team scale through reusable frameworks and libraries.
Champion best practices - set the bar for coding standards, automation, and ML productisation using modern cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
Mentor and uplift others - support junior data scientists and analysts, encouraging growth and knowledge-sharing within the team.
Strong applied data science experience, especially in product-focused roles, with a deep understanding of the digital product lifecycle.
Proficiency in developing search and recommendation algorithms, with a strong grasp of user intent and behaviour.
Solid knowledge of statistical methods, experimentation design, and interpreting test results to guide product decisions.
Hands-on experience deploying ML/NLP models at scale in real-world environments, with a focus on performance and robustness.
Proficiency in Python and data science libraries (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, NLTK), plus experience with tools like Pandas, Polars, and SQL.
Familiarity with ElasticSearch and search optimisation techniques, including ranking and relevance tuning.
Experience with CI/CD, MLOps, and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation).
Comfort working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and monitoring tools like Datadog for end-to-end model and system observability.
Ability to write clean, well-tested, and scalable code with strong documentation and code quality practices.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, product, and data teams to drive strategic outcomes.
