As a Senior Data Modeler in our Data Ventures team, you'll play a critical role in shaping the future of retail by imagining, developing, and maintaining data models that our Data Engineers, Scientists, and Analysts can rely on.
About Our Team
Our Data Engineering team is at the forefront of managing Walmart's vast data landscape. We build pipelines and data lakes to prepare big data for analysis, unlocking actionable insights in real-time. By leveraging cross-departmental data and machine learning, we create a holistic view of true profitability, saving millions of dollars across item categories and geographies while assisting our leadership in making better decisions faster.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Application Development team to implement data strategies, build data flows, and develop conceptual data models.
- Create logical and physical data models using best practices to ensure high data quality and support application, batch, and interactive use cases.
- Develop and maintain data modeling solutions optimized for relational, dimensional, and NoSQL databases.
- Maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models along with corresponding metadata.
- Develop best practices for standard naming conventions and coding practices to ensure consistency of data models.
- Recommend opportunities for reuse of data models in new environments.
- Perform reverse engineering of physical data models from databases and SQL scripts.
- Evaluate data models and physical databases for variances and discrepancies.
- Validate business data objects for accuracy and completeness.
- Analyze data-related system integration challenges and propose appropriate solutions.
- Guide System Analysts, Engineers, Programmers, and others on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements, and interfaces.
- Review modifications to existing software to improve efficiency and performance.
- Examine new application design and recommend corrections if required.
Essential Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you'll need:
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in data modeling, data analytics, data warehousing, software engineering, or a related field (or 5 years of experience with no degree).
- Strong knowledge of different data modeling techniques for data warehousing, such as 3NF, Dimensional, and hybrid.
- Experience working on large-scale data warehouses (DW)/operational data stores (ODS).
- Significant experience in building data models for MPP, Relational, and NoSQL technologies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills across a variety of stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications can give you a competitive edge:
- A Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Relevant industry experience (e.g., retail, supply chain, eCommerce, healthcare).
- Experience with data modeling, data analytics, and data warehousing.
