[Remote] Director of Engineering, Stop Loss – Remote

The Director of Engineering will be responsible for building and leading a world-class engineering team to drive the technology for an end-to-end Stop Loss solution, setting priorities, and implementing strategies that align with the company's growth. Responsibilities • Build and lead an inclusive, collaborative engineering team aligned with Symetra’s values and DEI commitments • Define technical strategy and partner with stakeholders to deliver end-to-end business solutions • Foster a culture of quality, agility, and continuous delivery with a DevSecOps mindset • Coach, mentor, and develop engineering talent; recruit and retain top performers • Drive large-scale initiatives delivering modern, AI-enabled products and experiences • Ensure secure, scalable, and high-performing solutions are delivered on time • Manage vendor relationships and lead transitions to new services • Reduce technical debt and operational risk while championing user-focused design • Support production releases and off-hours availability for critical systems • Contribute to departmental strategy and continuous improvement Skills • Bachelor's or master's in computer science or related field • 8+ years leading large, cross-functional engineering teams in a remote-first environment • Strong background in software engineering, AI, and solutions architecture • Hands-on experience with AWS, microservices, serverless, and distributed systems • Advocate for CI/CD and modern engineering practices • Skilled in data management, systems design, and agile methodologies • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills • Ability to balance long-term technology investments with short-term business needs • Passion for building shared services and solving complex integration challenges • Comfortable in fast-paced, high-visibility environments with ambiguity • Some travel required Benefits • Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements • Plan for your future with our 401(k) plan and take advantage of immediate vesting and company matching up to 6% • Paid time away including vacation and sick time, flex days and ten paid holidays • Give back to your community and double your impact through our company matching Company Overview • Symetra is a financial service company that provides retirement, employee benefits, group life, and disability insurance.
