Job Description Summary:
Southwestern Michigan College is seeking qualified adjunct instructors to teach
online Fundamentals of Chemistry courses beginning in the Spring 2026 semester. This position
requires demonstrated experience in online teaching and proficiency with virtual laboratory
instruction. Instructors are expected to create engaging online learning environments, develop or
adapt lab activities suitable for remote delivery, and maintain regular accessibility to students.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Science Education, or a closely related field including chemistry coursework or related professional experience
Demonstrated experience teaching online courses, including familiarity with best practices in remote instruction
Strong organization and communication skills
Proficiency with learning management systems (Moodle preferred), email, and general instructional technologies
Applicants are not required to live within the service area; however, they must maintain permanent residence in either Michigan or Indiana.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree or higher in Chemistry or a related discipline, with previous teaching experience
Community college or adult learner teaching experience
Quality Matters (QM) training or certification, or equivalent experience with online course quality standards
Experience designing or delivering virtual or simulation-based laboratory activities
Other Information:
All applicants must demonstrate the ability to promote active and collaborative learning through a variety of teaching methods, as well as relate to students. Excellent organization and communication skills as well as the demonstrated use of instructional technology are required.
Special Instructions to Applicants:Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach online courses consisting of the equivalent of 3 hours of lecture and 2 hours of lab instruction per week, using asynchronous, synchronous, or hybrid formats as assigned
Prepare or adapt laboratory activities appropriate for online delivery while ensuring a safe and effective learning experience
Maintain regular virtual office hours and provide timely, supportive communication to students
Assess student work, provide constructive feedback, and submit grades in accordance with College policies
Use Moodle consistently for posting assignments, tracking attendance/engagement, and maintaining grades
Demonstrate proficiency with instructional technologies, including virtual communication tools, online assessment tools, and Microsoft Office applications
Comply with all College rules, regulations, administrative practices, and policies
Provide student performance data required for departmental outcomes assessment
Support and engage a diverse online student population, including dual-enrolled high school students, traditional students, and adult learners
Promote active, collaborative, and inclusive learning through a variety of online teaching strategies
Additional duties may be assigned by the supervisor
