Job Overview
The InDesign Technical Support Specialist will provide advanced technical and production support to editorial, design, and prepress teams within an education publishing environment. This role focuses on print-based textbook and instructional material workflows, ensuring file integrity, production accuracy, and efficient pagination processes.
The ideal candidate will have deep hands-on expertise in Adobe InDesign for long-document publishing, strong knowledge of print production standards, and experience with automation (ExtendScript/JavaScript) to streamline composition, styling, and repetitive production tasks.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide expert technical support to editors, designers, and production teams working on print textbooks and instructional materials.
• Troubleshoot complex InDesign issues related to: Long-document management (books, chapters, templates), Master pages and layout grids, Styles (paragraph, character, object, table, GREP), Cross-references, indexing, TOC generation, Anchored objects and inline graphics
• Support print production workflows, including: Preflight validation, Font management, Image resolution and color space verification (CMYK/RGB/Spot), PDF/X export standards for press-ready files
• Develop and maintain ExtendScript/JavaScript automation to: Standardize styling, Automate pagination, Batch-process files, Reduce manual composition errors,
• Assist with installation and configuration of: Publishing plugins, Prepress tools, Version upgrades and Creative Cloud updates
• Collaborate with production editors, compositors, and print vendors to resolve file or output-related issues.
• Conduct workflow training sessions for editorial and design teams on best practices for print publishing.
• Prepare template samples and support pilot projects for new curriculum programs.
• Perform root cause analysis for recurring technical or production issues and recommend process improvements.
Qualifications
• Extensive hands-on experience with Adobe InDesign in a print publishing environment.
• Strong understanding of textbook or long-form publishing workflows (K–12 or Higher Education preferred).
• Advanced knowledge of: Layout systems and grids, Typography standards for print, Table formatting and complex layouts, Image handling and linking, Color management and print-ready PDF creation
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications including: InCopy, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat (Preflight, PDF optimization)
• Experience with ExtendScript or JavaScript automation in InDesign (highly preferred).
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills in production environments.
• Familiarity with Windows and macOS production setups.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical solutions for editorial and non-technical stakeholders.
• High attention to detail, strong quality control mindset, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
