Role Description The Northport VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one Lead Medical Records Technician Coder (Outpatient/Inpatient). This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section of the business office. • Reviews coding and assists coders in improving accuracy. • Provides guidance to various levels of staff to promote consistency in practice and compliance with coding rules and regulations. • Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters (inpatient or outpatient). • Applies advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures. • Selects and assigns codes from current versions of coding systems including ICD, CPT, and HCPCS. • Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines, and conventions. • Monitors ever-changing regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information. • Performs a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract various data. • Assists facility staff with documentation requirements to accurately reflect patient care. • Uses a variety of window-based applications in day-to-day activities. • Effectively communicates both orally and in writing to meet program objectives. • Works within a team environment to provide technical guidance and coordinate activities. Qualifications • United States Citizenship. • One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology and health records. • Associate's degree in health information technology/management or related field with relevant coursework. • Equivalent combinations of creditable experience and education are qualifying. Requirements • Mastery level certification in health information management or coding. • Ability to work with a team and provide technical guidance. • Advanced knowledge of current coding classification systems. • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing. • Knowledge of training methods and ability to train new coding staff. • Ability to collect and analyze data and present results. • Leadership skills, including interpersonal relations and conflict resolution. Work Schedule • Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm Education Requirements Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S. Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment.
